Hello! I'm Soya, a thirty-something millenial who was born on the west coast and now resides on the east coast of the USA. I'm Southeast Asian and receptive bilingual in my native tongue, Khmer or Cambodian. Long story short, I spoke my mother tongue first, and then... I started kindergarten in public school. My speaking skills faltered and my reading ability was saved by infrequent Saturday language school, which I hated. Saturday cartoons were super important.
Funnily enough, my kindergarten teacher was Japanese-American, but I wouldn't figure this put until much later when I saw her name in writing; my parents assumed she was Chinese. She was the one who showed us kanji and I was enthralled. My first character was 雨 ame and I never forgot it. In high school, we didn't have Chinese Mandarin or Japanese so I attempted Spanish, but the teacher spent most of the time talking about how she had a Masters' degree. You can imagine how much I picked up. Then, in university I finally took up Japanese, reaching pre-intermediate and for an elective I did beginner Korean.
I want to improve them little by little over time. Maybe this is where I log that study time.
